In an urban fantasy that charts daring new territory in the field, Jeremiah Hunt has been broken by a malevolent force that has taken his young daughter and everything else of value in his life: his marriage, his career, his reputation. Desperate to reclaim what he has lost, Hunt finally turns to the supernatural for justice.
Eyes to See is the first in a new urban fantasy series by author Joseph Nassise. The novel follows former Harvard professor Jeremiah hunt as he searches for his missing daughter Elizabeth, who vanished five years ago without a trace.
Jeremiah, still reeling from the disappearance of his daughter and the subsequent disintegration of his marriage and career, turns to the occult out of desperation. After using a spell/ritual taken from an old book, left behind by a mysterious man, he is given the unique ability to see through the eyes of the dead and other demonic forces, but not without cost.
With the help of two ghostly companions, Whisper and Scream, he finances his continued search for his daughter working as a paranormal-investigator and as a consultant for the Boston Police Department. While helping the local police investigate a crime he stumbles across a clue that might lead him to his daughter. This new clue leads Jeremiah on a chase and he starts to uncover something more sinister than just a random kidnapping.
As the chapters switch between the past and present, Hunt's evolution from academic to isolated mystic unfolds page by page. The author gives glimpses into the past to help the reader understand what has led Jeremiah Hunt to where he is now. Jeremiah is a man with nothing left to lose. He's rough around the edges, stubborn but really he’s just a man who would do anything to get his daughter back.
Nassise has set up a strong foundation for a riveting new series. He has crafted a fascinating supernatural world and filled it with unique and interesting characters along with some frightening creatures. Since Nassise himself is originally from Boston, he's capable of injecting the nuances of the areas in an authentic way. In his hands, the city becomes a battleground for a number of terrifying ghosts and worse.
Eyes to See is an excellent story with edgy, relatable characters, genuine chills, and creative forays into the occult. The story is atmospheric, shadowy and at times disturbing. It embodies all the things readers love about the supernatural horror genre, but operates with a great sense of mystery. Highly recommended for fans of Richard Kadrey’s Sandman Slim novels and Mike Carey’s Felix Castor novels. Watch for King of the Dead, the second instalment of the Jeremiah Hunt Chronicles.
