Murder is such a dirty word…
Envy is the gripping first installment in the Empty Coffin series from New York Times bestselling author Gregg Olsen. The small town of Port Gamble, Washington is stunned by the death of a young girl, Katelyn, and although the death is attributed to an accident, there are some who believe that suicide and homicide shouldn't be ruled out just yet.
Hayley and Taylor Ryan are the daughters of a famous true crime author and have secret paranormal abilities that fall into the general realm of ESP. They share intense emotions, have some precognition, but mostly they sense things, both deliberately-by going into a trance or touching objects-and inadvertently.
Although the Ryan twins weren't close to Katelyn at the time of her death, they used to be good friends and a combination of guilt and curiosity leads them to investigate the death and its true cause. The main storyline of the twins' informal investigation of the cause of Katelyn's death is sidelined at times by the mystery behind the supernatural abilities the twins share, as well as the story of a stubborn journalist searching for a game-changing story.
The town is full of interesting and colorful characters and we get to know them through the multiple point of view narration. The setting and the characters are brought to life with great vividness and with hidden depths and complexity, hinting at the fact that the story is more than just a run of the mill crime thriller.
With a vivid setting and fascinating premise, Envy is an original, dark, crime thriller, with an intriguing supernatural edge to it. The storyline twists and turns and keeps the reader guessing throughout and the main characters were really enjoyable to follow. I highly recommend this book and I am eagerly anticipating the 2012 release of Betrayal.
