Twenty years ago, a barmaid in a harbor town fell for a young sailor who turned pirate to make his fortune. But what truly became of Black Edward Tew remains a myster--one that has just fallen into the lap of freelance sword jockey Eddie LaCrosse.
Wake of the Bloody Angel is the fourth Eddie Lacrosse novel by Alex Bledsoe. This time, Eddie is hired by Angelina, the beautiful woman who owns the tavern below his office, to find her old lover--a pirate she hasn’t seen in twenty years. He left her to seek his fortune and though he promised to return, he never did. No one knows what happened to Edward Tew, but Angelina has hired Eddie to find out.
There are plenty of rumors when it comes to the infamous pirate, Edward Tew and his ship, The Bloody Angel. Some say Edward is dead and he and his ship is buried at the bottom of the sea with a king’s ransom in gold. Others claim he runs his own private pirate paradise, while some even believe he commands a pirate ghost ship with a damned crew.
To help with this task, Eddie teams up with Jane Argo, a former pirate queen turned pirate hunter turned sword jockey. Jane being a former pirate is invaluable to Eddie and the investigation. Eddie’s quest soon embroils him in one of the largest treasure hunts and mysteries concerning a pirate ship and her lost crew.
Wake of the Bloody Angel is well-paced, well-plotted, and has just the right amount of humor to ease the tension. The adventure unfolds in a precise, addictive manner allowing the reader to process the clues and information right along with Eddie and Jane to solve the mystery of what happened to Edward Tew. Like its predecessors, it crosses traditional noir crime fiction with well-known tropes from fantasy literature. Though this is the fourth in the series, each offers just enough recap on the protagonist’s past and past storylines to allow all to be read as standalones.
ALEX BLEDSOE is the author of three previous Eddie LaCrosse novels, The Sword-Edged Blonde, Burn Me Deadly, and Dark Jenny. Bledsoe is also a contributor to Tor.com.
