The latest gripping psychological thriller from the internationally bestselling author of The Wrong Mother and The Cradle in the Grave
The Other Woman’s House is Sophie Hannah’s sixth book featuring detectives Charlotte "Charlie" Zailer and Simon Waterhouse. This installment of Zailer and Waterhouse’s casebook takes them to Cambridge.
Connie Bowskill fears she is going insane. While taking a virtual tour of a house she is obsessed with, she sees a woman lying facedown in a puddle of blood. But when she returns with her husband in tow to show him, the body is gone. Nevertheless, Connie is convinced a crime has been committed, and goes to the police.
Connie attempts to solve the unnerving incident, with help from a honeymooning Zailer and Waterhouse and a stateside officer Sam Kombothekra. The only problem is she's the only one who saw the dead body and no one believes she’s telling the truth. With an unsupportive family and a husband who isn’t helping matters by making her feel like she’s losing her mind, Connie attempts to unravel the mystery of who this woman is and what her husband isn’t telling her.
Much of the writing concentrates on what goes on in the heads of the characters, and so their motives and perceptions become the narrative. By the same means Hannah taps into deep-seated fears and emotions. Hannah’s particular skill is how well she incorporates the psychological motivations of each of the characters while manipulating the reader at the same time.
Sophie Hannah just gets better and better. Her plots are brilliantly cunning and entirely unpredictable. Hannah, who is also a poet and children's author, has made a career out of shining a spotlight on the darkest of domestic scenarios. The Other Woman’s House is a deeply complex story where nothing is quite what it seems at first glance, and people are not whom they appear to be. Expect the unexpected right up to the very last page.
SOPHIE HANNAH is the author of the international bestsellers Little Face, The Wrong Mother and The Dead Lie Down. In 2004 she won the Daphne Du Maurier Prize for Suspense Fiction, and she is also an awarding-winning poet. She lives in Cambridge, England, with her husband and two children.
